Sunday Spotlight… Tuesday’s Children

In talking about 9/11 all week we wanted to direct you to something for our spotlight this week that would tie all of our efforts,  conversations and memories of the past few days together. We chose Tuesday’s Children. One of the thousands of September 11th related charities that popped up in the wake of 9/11, it has stood the test of time that only a few others have. It has moved forward to encompass more than just the victims of that day. And it continues to do good work in communities everywhere. So please, check out what we found out about Tuesday’s Children!

What does Tuesday’s Children do?
Tuesday’s Children programs include: The Career Resource Center, offered to young adults directly impacted by September 11, 2001 and families and children who have lost a love one in post 9/11 conflict. The Career Resource Center services are designed to provide young adults with tools and resources necessary to navigate the college, internship and career process; The Youth Mentoring program which is designed to encourage and support mutually beneficial, long-standing relationships between adult role models and children ages 7 to 18; The Helping Heals program, which connects youth and families with community service projects and disaster relief programs; Project COMMON BOND which brings together teens, ages 15-20, from around the world who share a ‘common bond’ — the loss of a family member due to an act of terrorism, violent extremism or war; Family Engagement which is designed to build a community of families with similar experiences and through community events create positive new traditions and introduce other Tuesday’s Children programs and services; The Mental Health & Wellness program offers crisis counseling, consultations and referrals to all 9/11 children and families and bridges mental health services and our wellness programs. Services for children, adolescents and adults include: psychological assessment; individual, family and couples counseling; support groups; and referrals to community resources; The Life Management Skills program offers support programs for adults including: stress and life management, mental health and wellness, parenting workshops, financial planning workshops and career counseling; The Widow and Widowers Support offers programs like Project Heart to Heart, which offers widows and widowers of September 11th and U.S. military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan resilience-building programs which help give them resolution to commemorate their loss and find ways to continue to heal and recreate their lives with a focus on positivity.

How and Why was Tuesday’s Children started?
Tuesday’s Children was founded to promote long-term healing in all those directly impacted by the events of September 11, 2001. Our mission today is to keep the promise to those children and families while serving and supporting communities affected by acts of terror worldwide. (Mission Statement)
We lost dear friends and relatives on September, 11th, but in the process, we’ve healed as a community and created lasting relationships that bond us together. Through our commitments to each other, we can heal by turning our tragedies into a positive force for good.
We have an enduring commitment to the children who lost parents on September 11th, and as they get older we are providing access to career services and strive to empower them to become the next generation of leaders by allowing them to give back through community service, mentoring, and supporting younger children in our community, including children of veterans and first responders.
Tuesday’s Children has a moral responsibility to share the knowledge we’ve gained since September 11th, about long-term and collective healing. For this reason, our mission has expanded to offer support and programming to other communities impacted by acts of terror. Through programs like Project COMMON BOND and the Resiliency Center of Newtown, we are committed to being a leader in long-term recovery from mass acts of tragedy and terrorism.
We feel it is our duty not only to memorialize those we’ve lost, but to do all we can to comfort and support their children and families… your living memorials.

A Bonus Interview as We Continue to Remember 9/11

We normally do not bring you an interview on Saturday, but today we make an exception. As we continue to honor those lost on that tragic September morning, we hope you’ll read this account of someone that has first hand memories.

Where were you on September 11, 2001?
“I was actually at home in Queens.”

How did you hear about what was happening in Manhattan?
“My brother Jeff, he’s also a retired cop, was working that day. I had just retired, but Jeff was still working in the office. We had worked together. He called me and woke me up that morning and said “You gotta put on the news”. As soon as I turned the TV on, I saw the second plane fly into the second building.”

Was he working in Manhattan that day?
“He was in Manhattan, in Spanish Harlem. We both worked in the narcotic division together. He was in charge of surveillance equipment so he didn’t go in the field. He basically worked in the office.”

What did you do once you were aware of what was going on?
“I kind of went into panic mode because I started thinking about my kids. They were in school. They were my first priority. The traffic was like mêlée in the area everywhere because everybody was racing into Manhattan…all the first responders. So what I did, I threw on my old police jacket and drove to both my kids schools and went in and grabbed them. They weren’t letting any of the kids leave school that day. You had to pick them up. I had to park about a block or two away from their schools and physically go in and get them.”

Did they give you a hard time?
“No, because I had the police jacket on and the shield hanging around my neck. That carried a little clout.”

Speaking of that, and hindsight is always 20/20, do you believe that was good protocol…to not allow kids to go home with their families?
“It was definitely good protocol because, that day, we didn’t know what to expect next. We knew it was terrorism but didn’t know what they were gonna hit next. They were worried about them hitting bridges, other buildings, airports. We didn’t know, so everything was on a lockdown and I think it was a real smart move that they kept the kids in schools.”

What did you do once you picked your children up?
“I tried to get on the phone, but of course the cell phones…you had to wait a while before you could get a signal because everybody was trying to make calls at the same time.
A buddy of mine that was assigned at the firehouse near the World Trade Center, his name was Manny. I called my friend Mike, we were all hunting buddies, and I just wanted to see if Manny was ok. That’s when I found out he was one of the first guys to die. When the building was coming down, he crawled underneath one of the trucks. Of course, all of the debris landed on top of him and crushed him. They did find him. In fact, he was one of the few people where they found the body and everything. He was, I think, the second fireman found.”

Did you know any other people that were down there that day?
“Oh yeah. We had another good family friend that was actually an identical twin, two kids I grew up with, and he died on 9/11 too.”

There were a lot of people, first responders, volunteers that were down there cleaning up and trying to recover other victims. What is your memory of that?
“I don’t know if you remember, they kind of put a halt to that. The fireman did not wanna stop looking. There were just so many of their own that they didn’t recover. There was a big thing on the news where they pulled the fireman out and the fireman started protesting. There was about a dozen fireman locked up because they didn’t leave. My brother-in-law happened to be one of them.
I remember after he got arrested, he got interviewed on the news, and I got interviewed on the news because they wanted someone from the police department. They just wanted to recover the bodies. It was just one of those things where they said enough is enough. I guess they were right at the time, but because you’re so into it, you don’t wanna stop.”

So, your brother-in-law was a firefighter at that time? Was he there that day?
“He called his captain and told him he was gonna be late that day. His captain said “That’s alright Willie. Take your time. But we’re heading down to the World Trade Center” and told him what happened. So Willie got down there late, and by the time he got to the World Trade Center, half his company was wiped out. Actually, a rookie died in his place.”

That’s awful. How did he deal with that afterward? You hear of a lot of people in that type of situation, and there were definitely examples of it from that day, having survivors guilt.
“He’s got some shit still going on with his lungs and he probably could retire but he won’t. His hair started falling out after that too. It’s probably a lot of post traumatic stress type of thing.
That day, my sister (she’s got four kids and they were all home)…Willie was trying to call her saying “this is what’s happening”. All my sister could hear was the screaming in the background. She called me and said “Steve, you’ve gotta call Willie and see what’s going on”, because she didn’t want the kids to hear what was actually happening down there. A couple of times, she heard the buildings going down. There weren’t just the two buildings. There were several other buildings that went down also that people don’t really talk about.
Personally, I had traveled through the World Trade Center all the time. After I retired, I went to school and took a course on computers and I used to take the subway in everyday and that’s where the subway was, the World Trade Center. So, you could visualize in your mind what was happening.”

Were you able to see any of what happened first hand?
“I made a trip in and it looked like a different planet. It looked like you were on Mars or the moon. It was all a different color, the buildings..there were no buildings. It was a dilapidated mess. Unreal. You just thought you were on another planet.”

How did you explain it to your children?
“My kids were old enough, they were in high school, they understood what was going on. You gotta tell them the truth…it was terrorism. They grew up with me being a cop so they were used to hearing horror stories and stuff like that I guess. It was scary for everybody.”

Did that day change life for you? And if so, how?
“Oh yeah. Just losing friends. It affected everybody in the United States and the world but I think it affected New York extra hard.”

I would say that’s fair.
“Yeah. I know it sounds crazy, but I think people were going out to drink more after that. You’d see more people in the bars after that. Everybody knew somebody that died.
There’s a cemetery near my house where my father’s buried, St. John’s, a huge cemetery. You’d drive by it and see these graves all dug. The grass all turned over and you knew there were tons of bodies going in. Even though there weren’t bodies, they were still doing funerals.”

Do you think then mayor, Rudy Giuliani, and the government did a good job during that crisis?
“Mayor Giuliani, at the time, was great. I think it brought New York together real tight. They even threw a concert for the fireman and their families at Madison Square Garden which was really cool. They did a lot for the city. Giuliani, the police commissioner, the fire commissioner…everybody handled it real well. Everybody stuck together real tight. New York was like one big family.”

Do you think anything like what happened that day, will happen again?
“Ya know, you think about what’s going on now with Isis and all this kind of shit, so you kind of get scared. It was simple for these terrorists to do what they did. And I know we take a lot of precautions these days but, I think you can slip past anything. So do I think it could happen again? I definitely think something can happen again.”

You moved out of New York since, but not because of 9/11. Would you ever move back to NYC again?
“It’s funny. I feel like I’m living in New York, living in Philly. Yeah, I would, if I had to I would. I wouldn’t have a problem with it. You’re gonna have problems no matter where you live…any city…it’s the same. They target a place, they’re gonna go for it. I think they picked New York because they were the two biggest buildings around. And it wasn’t just New York (they hit).”

What lesson would you pass on to people, that this experience taught you?
“Be aware of your surroundings. Be aware of everything that’s going on around you. Everyone around you. If you see something that don’t look right, you gotta speak up. That’s true with anything.”

Where Were You the Day America Changed? One Unified’s Own Accounts of 9/11.

This week, we shared some of our readers personal accounts of September 11th, 2001. Today, we share our own personal
accounts with all of you. Why do we feel it’s necessary to bring back the memories of such a tragically sad day? We’ve asked ourselves that question many times over. Maybe it’s healing. Maybe it’s to make sure that we don’t forget. Maybe it’s to help others learn about these events from a first person view. Maybe it’s something we can all relate to. Whatever the reason, many of us have vivid memories of that day. Here are ours…

noelle9:11There are a handful of events that changed my life forever. Falling in love with my husband, giving birth to my son, losing my uncle and September 11, 2001. That sunny, blue skied, Tuesday morning will forever be burned into my memory, like so many other people. My husband, who is a mail carrier, happened to be off that day and was home with our, then, 3 1/2-year-old son while I went to a friend’s house to get my hair cut. He took our son with him and our neighbor to get tires for his car. I was on route to my friends when I heard, on a local radio morning show (Preston and Steve), reports of a plane hitting the World Trade Center. I was stunned, but not alarmed, just thinking it was a terrible accident. I continued my drive. I then heard one of the radio personalities say that a second plane hit the other tower. Honestly, I thought they were joking and that it was in bad taste. I would’ve preferred that was the case but of course, it wasn’t. I called my husband to ask if he heard the news, and then my mother, who was working in center city Philadelphia at the time.

In the days and years that followed I’ve asked myself why I continued to my friend’s house and didn’t turn around and go home. But I didn’t. I think I didn’t quite grasp what was happening; the magnitude of it. It was all speculation at that point. When I arrived there, she had no idea what had happened. Having small children, all the TV’s were tuned into Nickelodeon or another channel showing much more innocent programming than what was on all the other channels. At that time, they didn’t break in with breaking news. Once I filled her in, she changed the channel and we watched in disbelief as a plane flew through the Pentagon. Fear set in. Her husband, a contractor, was doing work at Philadelphia International Airport that day. Not knowing where the next attack would be, but sure there would be more, she was petrified for her husband. Fortunately, he was ok. And after some time, I headed home. In that time, United flight 93 crashed into a field in rural Pennsylvania.

My husband, son and I sat with our neighbors in front of the television as we continued to watch the horrors unfold live. The towers falling, learning the number of human lives lost, watching then mayor of New York, Rudy Giuliani trying to keep his city together. A vivid memory for me, was watching as air traffic was cleared…the map showing all the “blips” disappearing from the previously friendly skies. In the days that followed, I unfortunately didn’t move from the television. I cried every waking moment. What kind of world was this going to be for my son? I spiraled down. I didn’t want to do anything. Talk to anyone. I ventured into a church for the first time in a while, by myself, to pray and search for answers. Then, one afternoon, I noticed my son playing with his toys. He had his firefighter, army and police figurines arranged around a miniature American flag on our coffee table. That was the moment I realized the news could not be on 24/7. I needed to snap out of it for his sake.

I decided to go to the mall with a couple of my neighbors who were going to purchase clothes for their kids who were back to school. As we approached Roosevelt Boulevard and Comly Road, there were people standing on the sidewalks up and down the Boulevard waving flags, chanting “USA”, hugging each other. Cars and trucks were beeping and waving. I had to be there. I asked my friends to let me out and carry on to the mall without me. They chose to join me instead. That moment, filled my heart and spirit so much. We talk about being unified on this site often (it is, after all, the idea behind it), and THAT day on THAT road, was one of the most unified feelings I’ve ever had. I never felt more connected to the people in my community than I did that day, and haven’t since.

As the days went on, planes were once again allowed in the air. I live near an airport and I remember the first couple of weeks after the attacks, the planes taking off or landing and being so scared of each plane that sounded especially low. As time went on, it became the normal noise again. The wounds healed, but they left some nasty scars. It’s been 14 years and I still think about that day often. I watch the specials, the interviews and maybe I shouldn’t. But I do. I pray for the families that were personally affected. I pray nothing like that ever happens again. That day changed most of us in some way. It knocked us down a few pegs and made us question our safety and existence. But it also showed us what people are made of, and I’m not talking about the sub-humans that did this. I’m talking about the firefighters and police officers that walked into danger to save others, not knowing if they’d come back out. The civilians that volunteered to hand out water, sift through debris, give blood. The ones that went back to look for or save co-workers and friends, the people who were on a plane and sacrificed themselves to save our capital showed the best of humanity in the worst of times. And, for me personally, I thank those people of Philadelphia, lined up on a busy road to stand together in unity to give me hope for humanity. Noelle

911-1On the morning of September 11, 2001 I started my morning commute in the usual way. I woke up, got dressed, got into my car, and proceeded to my job as a social worker at a long-term care facility in Philadelphia. There was nothing particularly remarkable about the day, save maybe the fact that I was moving a little slower than normal as I was 8 months pregnant with my first child and really starting to feel the effects of my larger size and the long summer’s heat. As per my usual at the time, I had Howard Stern tuned in on the radio (call it a pregnancy related craving). When Howard and Robin (Quivers, co-host and the show’s news reporter) said that a plane had reportedly crashed into one of the buildings of the World Trade Center, I like almost everyone, figured that it was a small private commuter type of plane that had somehow veered horribly off course. It would not have been the first time that a small aircraft had hit a high-rise building, and my initial thought was, how sad for anyone who was aboard that plane. As they continued to talk on the air, speculating about what had happened and discussing the resulting fire from the crash, I went over my day’s agenda in my head. Nearly at my destination, there was no way I could have prepared myself for what was about to come.

I pulled up outside my office and Howard and his crew had resumed talking about whatever goofy things they talked about that morning. I continued to listen as I gathered up my things and got ready to go. Their banter was sprinkled with mentions of the possibility of a terrorist attack and of the plane reportedly being a commercial airliner. Despite their ability to keep things humorous, my nature (and raging pregnancy hormones)  had me nervous and upset. I got out of my car and ran into the building, stopping just long enough to put my things down in my office and get out to the unit I worked on. When I got there the televisions were already tuned to the local news. I got on to the unit at about 9:01 a.m. that day. At 9:03 a.m. I watched in absolute horror along with the other staff and residents of that unit, as United Airlines Flight 175 flew into the south tower of the World Trade Center. I slid down against the wall I’d been leaning on and felt my stomach drop as I watched the second tower burst into flames.

We watched in horror as report after report began documenting the events that had transpired behind the scenes that morning. The reports of a potential hijacking, then the alerting of the President. We watched as the report came across about the Pentagon. It was the most horrified and helpless I remember feeling in my adult life. We were under attack, and no one knew where it would happen next. By this point some of the other staff that I work with, including some of my close friends, had assembled together to try to make some sense of what was happening. I listened as, for the first time in the history of aviation, the FAA grounded all flights over or bound for the continental United States and directed the over 3,300 commercial flights already in the air, to their safest, closest destinations. I crumbled to the floor, torn between being a strong voice for the people I was charged with caring for, and a weeping child, crying for a world that no longer would exist. I chose the first option and I gathered my things and began to check on all of the residents and staff.

Some of the people who resided on my units had family, friends, or neighbors who worked in and around what would later be known as Ground Zero. Fortunately, my work was primarily with patients who were struck with Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias, many of whom could not fully grasp what was occurring, nor could they even recall that someone they loved was trapped in the horror that we watched. It may have been the first time I saw any positives to those illnesses. After I had made my rounds, and contacted my husband and family, we gathered together to have a staff meeting. Getting through to our loved ones was difficult but not impossible. Getting through to anyone in or around the island of Manhattan was an exercise in futility. My co-worker and friend was trying to reach her father who lived in Manhattan at the time. A nurse on my unit was trying to reach her son, who worked in a building a half a block away from 1 World Trade Center. The bridges in and out of Philadelphia had been closed and I think we all agreed that not much work was going to be done that day. We were all in what I can clearly see now, was a state of shock. Still, the bulk of us soldiered on and stayed in the building, together, watching as the picture of what transpired that day became clearer and clearer.

When I got home that day, I collapsed in a ball on my couch. There I would remain for the next 4 days pretty much around the clock. I, like my co-founder and friend, spiraled into a sadness so profound that I knew I had to shake it, but I was bound to it in an inexplicable way. I felt like I owed it to those people to watch, to never take my eyes off of their story, their pain. I felt like I owed it to the people who died on the planes just trying to get where they were going that day; to the people who left for work that morning like I did, never possibly imaging that a 767 would come crashing through their building and end their lives. I felt like I owed it to the people who, when faced with the grisliest decision imaginable, chose to end their own lives in a truly unfathomable way, rather to then to see it end in an even more unfathomable way. But then, after days of phone calls and attempts by those nearest and dearest to me to “talk me down”, I had a moment of clarity.

My moment came when I had been cursing the world that I was about to bring a child into. I had spent days wondering how, wondering why, I would subject a new and innocent life to the atrocities of this world. And then, one night, in my usual CNN marathon viewing, came an interview with someone who had lost a child in the attacks. Days later and they were still hopeful. They hoped that somehow, some way, their loved one had gotten out. That maybe they were lost, confused, injured, or unable to communicate their identity. As unlikely as it seemed, it didn’t matter. What mattered was that they hoped. They were experiencing the greatest tragedy of our time first hand, and had the presence of mind to thank the first responders, those people who ran into a disaster to help others get out of it. They thanked the city, the police, the volunteers who had made their way to Ground Zero from all over in order to help. If they could have that kind of gratitude, that kind of hope, than surely I too could get up off of the couch, get on with my life, and have hope that I could make a place in this not always so terrible world for my child.

I didn’t stop watching altogether and I still watch the specials and the anniversary coverage. I will never forget. Nor should any of us. But I rededicated myself that day to being a more grateful person and to being a mom who shows her children that although there are bad things, and bad people in this world, every good and positive thought and action weakens the resolve of evil. It’s up to us to take the memories of that day, of those people, and make it somehow matter.

Don’t forget to honor one! #whowillyouronebe #oneof2977

They were firefighters and police officers, EMTs and accountants. They were American and British and French and Chinese. They were every color, every creed. They were someone’s very best friend, and someone’s first love. They were someone’s neighbor, and someone’s secret crush. They were uncles and aunts, cousins and friends. They were sisters, brothers. They were old and they were young. They were mothers and daughters, fathers and sons.
And 2,977 of them perished in the tragedy of events on September 11th, 2001.
It’s hard to write down 2,977 names. It’s hard to read them. It’s hard to even think in those numbers in terms of lost lives. Every one of them deserves to be read. They deserve to be read and remembered- really remembered. Nearly 3,000 names is a lot to process. So we ask that you take just a moment to remember. If you have the time to read all of the names, please do. And if you don’t, why not just pick one? Pick a name, any name from the list. Say it out loud. Imagine for a moment, who is this person? What did he or she do for a living? Why were they there that day? How old were they? Who did they leave behind? Maybe Google them and see who they were and how they are remembered. And then please share. If all you can do is pick a name, that’s okay too. We’re giving you the names, hometowns, ages, and the locations in which they died on 9/11. We’re putting it all out there for you. Pick one. Post it in the comments. Put it on our wall. Make it your Facebook status! Tweet it. Whatever you want to do. Tell us who you are remembering, and share it to encourage others to pick someone to remember too!
Who will your ONE be? If you use one or both of the hashtags below, ALL of our post will stick together, wherever we put them! It’s a sad day, but we can all be unified today in our grief and remembrance.

We’ll go first….stay tuned to our social media accounts for ours.

Watching the World Change: A Personal Account from 9/11, New York.

911post2Today we’re bringing you an interview with a transit authority bus driver who was working in Manhattan the morning of September 11th, 2001. Talking about 9/11 is rarely an easy topic for anyone. If you haven’t already seen our post from Monday, we talked to several people to get their ‘where were you when…” moments about that day. I don’t think there was a single one that was not packed with raw emotion. During this interview, the bus driver, the interviewer and a handful of people who were on hand observing, all became emotional. There were moments where we paused to take a breath or to wipe a tear.

The mood was quiet and contained a somber tone that I can’t convey in words. I can honestly say that this interview reminded me that anyone who was impacted directly by those events, carry deep wounds with them to this very day. This interview brought us right back to that morning. We so appreciate someone opening up to us so that we can get a better understanding of something.
I hope that you will read this interview and take a moment to appreciate his efforts to tap into a very painful and emotional time in order to share with us. Please, share in the comments below with us, and with the bus driver (who will be reading), where you were, what you were doing, how you felt, anything at all. Sometimes unity comes in the wake of tragedy. Sometimes we need to reach out and let someone know that we feel what they’re saying. Sometimes we need to be one, unified.

Can you tell us what you do for a living?
I drive a bus for the New York City Transit Authority.

Were you working at that job on September 11th, 2001?

Where were you when you first heard what was going on at the World Trade Center?
I was just exiting the Lincoln Tunnel when I heard about it on the portable radio on my bus. Then a few seconds later my dispatcher came on and announced it, and when he did, he could even not believe what he was announcing!

What is the bus route that you usually drive in New York City?
It depends on what I pick for that season. We pick routes that usually go 3-4 months at a time.

Do you or did you ever have a route that went to and from the area of the World Trade Center?
At one time I actually used to drop off and pick up people at that bus stop (the World Trade Center) every day at that time- the time that the first plane hit.

You weren’t driving that route that day though?
No I wasn’t.

So you had heard on the radio and from your dispatcher what was going on not far from where you were. From the route you were on that day, when were you able to actually visually observe any signs of what was going on?

When I made a left on 57th st. and looked east I could see the smoke- only the smoke. But as soon as I got to the area where I was supposed to drop my bus, which is the old Greyhound depot at 41st and 11th, I could see the towers.

So when you dropped your bus off the towers were still up and on fire?

911What were you and the other people with you doing? What did you observe?
We went to get a better view of the towers, we got on top of the roof of the old Greyhound depot. Whoever was there to park their bus that morning got up there to look at the towers.

What was going on around you?
We were just watching for the first hour I guess. We heard a lot of special service vehicles, sirens, shooting down to the southern part of Manhattan. Then after about an hour and a half that’s when we started seeing all the people walking from there.

What did they look like? Were they people who were coming from the World Trade Center?

People looked scared, in shock, confused. They all wanted to go home. It was hundreds at first, then thousands of people just walking, walking on West st. They made their way there because that’s where the waterway shuttles have their ports. They wanted to get home that day. They were trying to get the shuttles to take them out of there and get them to Jersey.

So the people you were seeing come by, did you get the impression that they were people who had gotten out of the towers? Or just people working in Manhattan and realizing what was going on were just trying to get away from the city as quickly as possible?
There had to be a lot of them who worked in the towers, the ones that got out before, so they got out without really being covered with a lot of the soot and stuff. It just seemed like anybody who worked downtown just walked and walked, like 3 1/2 miles to try to get out.

Were you still watching when the first tower started to come down? Did you actually see it happening?
I saw it happen. I saw it come down.

I know it’s hard, but is there any way that you can describe what it was like?
(a long silence occurs here and both the driver and the interviewer have tears in their eyes).

Is it even possible to explain? It’s okay if it’s not.
The first words that came out of my mouth were… “all of those people!” Then when I saw it come down, I don’t know… at that point it seemed like no one was looking at the tower at that moment but me. And I said, “look it’s coming down!” And when they saw that everyone, men, they just started crying like little kids. After, you go to the locker room and men were in there just crying like babies. People were trying to comfort each other you know. It was just a tough day.

How were you guys getting information? I mean I know you were watching things unfold from a distance, but how were you finding out what was officially going on? Were you guys aware of what happened at the Pentagon and in the field in Pennsylvania?
We found out on tv. We were watching it but we were watching it on tv too, on tvs we had in the garage.

Were you guys afraid? Was there a sense of fear, of not knowing what was going to happen next, if something else was coming?
Well, we were afraid for our families I think. We couldn’t communicate with anyone. I think that was what our main worry was about.

How long was it before you were able to make any kind of contact with your families? How long was until they knew for sure that you were safe?
It was maybe 7 or 8 hours.

I should mention that you lived in Philadelphia at the time. How long was it before you were able to get out of Manhattan and back home to your family?
They wanted to keep us in Manhattan so that we could start bringing back any people who still needed to get home. I did only one trip on the regular route. I got a couple of people I was able to get home, not many. I just told them you know come on, come on board, we didn’t take money or anything. They just wanted us to be able to pick up people who normally took that route home but everyone had already been trying to get home way before that.

By that time, later in the day, by the time the immediate chaos had died down and that surge of people trying to get where they needed to go had died down, what was the mood on the street? Was it empty? Quiet?
It was empty. There wasn’t many people. The people I saw were people who were out trying to help other people mostly.

Did you see a lot of people who were injured from where you were?
No not really, no.

I know after the towers came down, on tv we could see just a massive amount of damage to property for quite a ways- cars crushed, windows smashed, signs toppled, debris everywhere, did that make its way as far as to where you had been observing?
No. No. It didn’t make its way to us.

Were you able to get close enough to witness all of that, the soot on everything, the demolished buildings?
No, not then. I mean when I was going home finally and I was going through the small tunnel, inside the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, I looked ahead and I could still see smoke and I could see the soot on everything, firefighters, policemen, you could see the part that was left of the big building leaning over.

When you got back to Philly that night, how long was it until you had to go back to Manhattan?
I had to go back the next day. We didn’t have any service. The whole city was just shut down. They just kept us in house for a few days until the TA decided to bring just express service back to the city.

A lot of people only got to see this all unfold on tv. The media really showed a lot of stories of people coming together trying to help one another out, lending a hand, sacrificing to help at Ground Zero and in other areas, did you see this?
After a couple of days I was able to walk around the city. The police dept. had tents set up with supplies, stuff to take to the fire dept. down to Ground Zero or wherever they were needed. Those who were helping if they needed to take a break, they could just come and sit down for a few minutes, eat something, get water.

It’s been said that the mood in New York in the days that followed was one in which everyone had each other’s back; everyone was able to pull together and put aside any differences for the greater good. Would you say that that is true?
You know it was a bad time for New Yorkers, however it was pretty good to see the goodness come out in everyone, that was great. I mean you know what they say about New Yorkers… we get a bad rap, about our temperament and things like that, but during that time I think every New Yorker was an angel. There was no crime, nothing.

As a New Yorker, how do think (then) Mayor Giuliani and the city handled what happened? I can’t imagine facing a much more difficult situation as an elected official.
He was wonderful. He handled it great. They all did.

Do you think in the days and weeks that followed, there was any kind of fear in the city that it may happen again?
We know it’s gonna happen again. I mean we think it’s going to happen again. We don’t know where. We don’t know when. But New Yorkers are back to where they belong, who they are, their attitudes and all that.

Have you been to the new site at Ground Zero, the memorial and all of that?
I go by it almost every day.

Is it well received by people? Are there a lot of visitors?
It’s a very popular place for tourists! They’re making a lot of money there. I’ve seen it from the bus, that’s about it.

Do you think that it’s a fitting tribute for all of the people who lost their lives there?
(Long pause) Yes, it is. It is. I don’t think they should be charged for it, but then how are you going to keep supporting something like that I guess. You need funding.

One thing that always struck me after that morning was the walls and walls all of signs and posters people put up of their missing loved ones, hoping against hope that perhaps somehow they had made it out and were simply missing or wandering with amnesia, or in a hospital without identification. Did you see any of those? Were they as impactful as they looked on tv?
Yes, yes. I saw that the first night. When I started doing my trips to try to take the little bit of people left back home, I saw them. That was sad. There’s an armory on Lexington and 24th, that’s where I first saw that.

You witnessed something that is impossible for most to even fathom because it’s so surreal, like something you’d see in a movie, not occurring before your very eyes. When something so inexplicably tragic and senseless happens, do you think that there is any lesson that can be learned, any message that people can take away from it as some tiny comfort in all of this, even all these years later?
The only thing I can say is love one another, you know? Be kind. Help each other whenever you can. Love each other.

That’s a great lesson.
